To help you to create the best party to mark the King’s Coronation, we’re sharing inspiration and insight from our team of professional event planners. In this, the second of the series, we’ll examine the King’s Coronation party décor ideas.  TLC’s top tip for stylish Coronation party décor? Think beyond the obvious red, white, and blue bunting and opt for a theme that’s more subtle in its celebration of the King. Take inspiration from a royal hue, indulge in the King’s love of gardening, style your party around the era King Charles was born or recreate a palatial dinner party at home.

PURPLE REINS

We start our King’s Coronation party décor ideas with colour – purple. A hue with a regal history makes the perfect Coronation party palette. Purple was historically reserved for society’s elite and to this day, has royal associations. In fact, King Charles III’s Coronation robes will be purple.

Collect trinkets, votive holders, candlesticks, vases, and vessels in your chosen hue. Include candles and glassware too for an eclectic display. On your table, create a classic Ombre effect using every variant of the shade. Take it from the lightest lilac right through to deep purple. Add in tapered candles and candelabras for height and interest.

Decorate with fragrant lavender for a multisensory experience that fills the room with colour and scent. Suspended it from the ceiling on floral chandeliers. Use across a focal archway or in floral installations.

Balloons are often used to add colour at parties. We don’t usually include then in our event designs, but they have come a long way in the last few years and if it’s good enough for The Kardashians!!! So, if you do want to use them as a cost-effective décor idea, stick to the Ombre effect and arch them across a wall or focal point in the room.

Purple is also a dramatic background colour on which to layer gold, bronze and vibrant oranges and reds. Carpets, table linens and chair seats in a deep purple provides depth and luxury. The bold floral décor, gold vases and chairs add the regal element. Its statement making!

Draped fabric is a high-end alternative to bring a different dimension to your event. It can help to zone areas and create a dramatic diversion to the eye. Suspend coloured fabric from the ceilings or create an indoor/outdoor space if your party is outside. You can use draping to frame an entrance or create a backdrop to a cake table/buffet or staged area.

FLORAL FLOURISHES

Among King Charles’ quirkier attributes is his love of gardening he is infamous for talking to flowers. Spring is the perfect time for a floral themed party.

Dress your space with an abundance of blooms. Arrange potted floral décor around the room to create an elegant indoor garden. A timeless colour match with the hues of green leaves and foliage, simple white candles can complete the look. it’s much more sustainable than decorating the table with a bounty of cut flowers. Gift these to people – a favour with longevity to be enjoyed for years to come.

Arrange a sea of trailing wisteria or honeysuckle around trellises or archways.  Remember that decorating the space above head height creates drama. Suspend floral chandeliers or a canopy above the table filled with trailing blooms. A huge floral runner with a waterfall edge trailing off the table can create a similar aesthetic.

Use printed linens with a floral theme – either on napkins or the full tablecloth. Don’t forget that some flowers are edible too, use them to embellish drinks, salads, sides and even cakes.

1940S COLOUR POP

Organise your party with a 1940s theme in honour of the era King Charles was born.

Décor in the forties was characterised by bright candy hues and chintzy floral fabrics. Sunshine yellow, teal and cornflower blue would all make dazzling, uplifting colour themes. Use ditsy floral material for table linens or napkins. Coloured glassware or charger plates can add a pop of colour to your table.

Of course, bunting was characteristic of the era – think VE day celebrations. If you’re going to use it them, make it significant. Create your own with materials to match the theme – florals and splashes of your chosen hue.

Create a retro cocktail bar as your room’s focal point- stylish and practical. A hostess trolley is a great alternative if budgets are tight.

THERE’S NO PALACE LIKE HOME

If your are looking for some King’s Coronation party décor ideas that you can use in you own home (Palace??), this one is for you. Recreate the splendour of Buckingham Palace with gilded décor and rich, sumptuous textures. Velvet, silks, and metallic tassels creating a feeling of grandeur.

The golden glamour of Royal banquets can be recreated by using elegant white linens. Or source a gold mirror table top with gold frame wooden chairs to match.  It’s a rare occasion so go all out. Have a throne at the top of the table for a guest of honour.

Clear plate chargers trimmed with pearls (a favourite of HM Queen Elizabeth II), and gold cutlery. Add clear glassware with a golden rim for additional wow factor. Keep flowers simple and low but add a tall, gold candelabra for drama. If budget permits battery operated candles, tall and thin, chunky, and low are a great investment and last forever without dripping onto the cloths!

RUSTIC AND RECYCLED

King Charles is an enthusiastic environmentalist so create a rustic theme to your event with sustainable touches.

Go natural, using organic elements, such as basic, wooden rounds for charger plates, pebbles, seashells, and potted plants to embellish. Or try wooden bench tables with bark or natural foliage table décor and simple, inexpensive tealight candles. Suspend a rustic wooden frame above the tables and drape with moss, foliage, and rustic lighting with industrial lighting inside recycled jam jars.

Think about unusual items you can use as part of a décor installation – a vintage bike sourced from a second-hand store. Ladder shelves and branches fashioned into a trellis for floral décor.

Why not rent elements of your party décor too – multi-use is always better than buying throwaway single use items.
